G
Gene

Unit of heredity in living organisms. They are encoded in the organism’s genetic material (usually DNA or RNA) and control the physical development and behaviour of the organism.

Gene Silencing
The general term used to describe epigenetic processes of gene regulation. The term gene silencing is generally used to describe the “switching off” of a gene by a mechanism other than genetic mutation.

Genetic Recombination
The transmission-genetic process by which the combinations of alleles observed at different loci in two parental individuals become shuffled in offspring individuals.

Glycosylation

The process resulting in the addition of saccharides (sugar) to proteins.

V
Validation

A documented program that provides a high degree of assurance that a specific process, method or system will consistently produce a result meeting pre-determined acceptance criteria.

Vector

DNA construct, such as a plasmid or a bacterial artificial chromosome, that contains an origin of replication. An appropriate replication origin causes a cell to copy the construct along with the cell’s chromosomes and to pass it along to its progeny. A single cell that has been transformed with a vector will grow into an entire culture of cells, all containing the vector and any gene attached to it within the construct.
